Low-Cost Airlines From Canada to Europe

Can't wait to take your trip to Europe? It's a magical place, an absolute travel must!

Though, with the Canadian dollar so bad these days it's extra important to get flights for the best possible price! (Anyone else feeling the travel-related dollar-through-the-floor pain that I am?) Because of the terrible dollar, flight prices in Canadian are NOT what they once were, but if you wait for the dollar to go back up, you could be waiting a longgggg time unfortunately it appears. But the low dollar doesn't mean you can't travel, it just means you need to be smarter about your searching (and book a little earlier than normal).

I've scoured the internet and used a little experience to put together a list of some little-known airlines, paired with the best flight search engines, so you can guarantee yourself you're getting the best price possible!

Note: If you live in Toronto, pat yourself on the back, you'll likely be getting the cheapest flights in the country. You'll notice many flight examples on this list are from Toronto, and that's because from many other cities in Canada, it requires a stop in Toronto to get where you're going.

*Prices showed in screenshots on this post were found on Jan 13th & 14th, 2016. Prices fluctuate throughout the year, and prices also depend on how far out you're booking from your departure date.

WestJet

WestJet is the second largest Canadian airline, and while WestJet's flights are mostly within North America, there are also flights offered to three major cities in Ireland, England and Scotland. If you're looking for a summer backpacking excursion, WestJet could be a good option for you, as many people choose to start their European expedition in English speaking countries, and then wander out further south into Europe.

Price Example: St John's - Dublin, Ireland for $334.31 CAD, May 16th

WOW Air

This is the new kid on the block everyone's been talking about, including myself. All the hype started this summer with flights for $149 from Canada to Europe mentioned. This enticing fare led to lots of excitement over the new airport destinations added in Canada, though unfortunately there don't seem to be any $149 promo flights available on the site now, their prices are still below the average carrier. Keep in mind, as a newer airline WOW has many routes which only are serviced on some days of the week.

Price Example: Toronto - Bristol, England for $275.00 CAD, Sept. 18th

Air Canada Rouge

Air Canada Rouge is part of the Air Canada family, and is dubbed the 'Leisure Airline'. While the airline uniform hat style is questionable, the prices are good. Better than good actually, Air Canada Rouge has the lowest price on a flight I'm eyeing at the moment, and has a quality lineup of airports both in Canada, and Europe.

Air Transat

Air Transat has offered Canadians cheap flights for years! In fact, I took my first ever trip to Europe with them! For flights across the Atlantic to Europe, I only successfully found ones from Toronto and Montreal. Air Transat provides service from 19 other Canadian cities, but you may need to connect through Toronto and Montreal to get to Europe.

Condor

Condor has managed to ensure your eyes are glued to their safety videos the entire show through. While their flight safety videos are entertaining, they took it to the next level with their ferry safety rap video. You'll need to see it to believe it (so take a look below). Safety video aside, Condor flies to and from such a great number of Canadian and European cities, listing them all would have been fruitless. Go ahead and assume they fly to and from where you're going, and visit their site to double check, I'm sure Condor will have you covered.

Iceland Flights To Europe

Iceland Air

If you haven't heard, Iceland is hot right now (and I don't mean temperature wise). Justin Beiber basically filmed a  "look at how gorgeous Iceland is, Imma frolic through it" video - see below). Now we've determined Justin has been to Iceland, we all must as well. In an effort to increase tourism to Iceland the airline offers stopovers in Iceland for up to 7 days on your flight to or from mainland Europe, for no extra cost. For actually going to Europe directly I wouldn't suggest Iceland Air, their prices are well above the rest of the list. However, if you're dying to get to Iceland, or want to have an Iceland + somewhere else in Europe trip, they're worth checking out.

How To Get Flights To Europe Cheap

Sata

There's a stunning collection of islands situated between North America and Europe called the Azores islands. The islands are an autonomous region of Portugal, and while naturally gorgeous, the islands are rather isolated and historically difficult to travel to and from. Sata airlines is committed to keeping the islands connected to the rest of the world via air travel. As such, Sata offers flights to and from Toronto and Montreal to the Azores Islands, as well as many cities in Portugal and Spain.

Price Example: Toronto - Lisbon, Portugal for $370.36, October 26th

Combine airlines for extra savings with Search Engines

Now we know the carriers with the lowest prices for air travel from Canada to Europe, let's look at how to lower the prices even more! Some of these cheaper airlines only fly to a handful of cities, and don't service the exact route you're looking to take. No fear, flight search engines will combine flights from a number of airlines, to get you the lowest price and the destinations you're hoping for.

If you want to take the time to really find the lowest price, I would suggest searching airline specific websites AND the search engines! Why? Some of the ultra low cost carriers are not included in the site search engines. Alternatively, the flight search engines sometimes combine a few airlines together, to get you your trip at rock bottom price. So it really is worth checking out both.

Here's the flight search engines to check. Of course (just to make our lives difficult) the flight search engines do not all check the same airlines. SO, it's worth researching on a few. Here's my favourites & special features of each to take note of.

Google Flights

Features: Google Flights is perfect for the traveler who is flexible with their destination, and just wants a flight for a fantastic price. Google flights will let you search entire countries and regions (eg. Europe), and will then display the lowest price flights to a variety of cities in the specified area.

Price Example: Toronto - London (direct) $271.00 CAD, June 8th via WestJet

Skyscanner

Features: Just like Google Flights, Skyscanner has an 'Everywhere' feature. Have a week vacation, and want to go wherever you can get the best deal. Look no further than Skyscanner's everywhere feature. Alternatively, are you traveling somewhere for a specific event or location? Sign up to Skyscanners Price Alerts.

Price Example: Montreal - Frankfurt (1 stop) for $421.00 CAD, May 18th via Condor

And just to drive home my point that search engine are your best friend. Check out this flight, Toronto to Lisbon. $380.00 on Skyscanner, $420.00 on the Sata website. Same dates, same flight, same currency.

Momondo

Features: Momondo makes it clearly visible on their flight search page, which days are the best to fly to your particular destination. Sometimes the difference between flying on a Friday versus Monday can be well up to $100 or more.

Price Example: Halifax - Manchester (1 stop) for $433.00 CAD, May 26th via WestJet & Flybe
