If you're looking to see a perfect quaint German town that is not absolutely over run with tourists, look to Goslar in northern Germany.
Nestled in the Harz Mountains, it's a beautiful drive getting into the little town. Goslar is filled with half-timbered houses lining tiny one way cobblestone streets and small gurgling creeks winding through houses and gardens.
No, the boyfriend and I aren't giants, the houses were just built sooooo long ago, the door frames we're made for people who were much shorter than us.
I would highly recommend a meal at Brauhaus, its right off the old market square, and they brew a wonderful beer in house. (And be sure to get the Schnitzel with mushrooms!)
